==Versions==

The original 1998 version of Grim Fandango was released only for Windows.  In 2015 a remastered version was released for Windows, MacOS X, Linux, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita.  The remastered version is not supported by ResidualVM.  Grim Fandango Remastered was developed by Tim Schafer's studio, Double Fine Productions.  Grim Fandango Remastered still uses GrimE, but has high definition textures, videos with less compression, a new point and click control scheme, and enhanced music played by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.  Like the Monkey Island special editions, most of the data from the classic 1998 version is included as well and the user can toggle between the remastered and classic modes.  Although the classic game is mostly the same as the 1998 release, the files have changed, and it is neither detected nor supported by ResidualVM.

Grim Fandango was the first LucasArts adventure game to not use the SCUMM scripting language. Instead, it used an engine called GrimE (Grim Engine), which was based upon the Lua open source scripting language. The game follows Manny Calavera, a grim reaper for the Department of Death in the Land of the Dead. He learns that the system he works for is corrupt, after a woman who led a great life, Mercedes (Meche) Colomar, doesn't get to go straight to the seventh level of the afterlife, the land of eternal rest. Manny must take a four year journey to find out who's behind the corruption, find Meche, and earn himself a place in the land of eternal rest.

[edit] Current status in ResidualVM

Grim Fandango is completable and fully playable but there may still be some bugs and glitches.

There are also a few things that aren't implemented at all, or doesn't work right yet:

  • Aspect ratio in fullscreen mode
  • Lighting not working properly

ResidualVM does however also fix some bugs present in the original game. See Grim Fandango Original Bugs for a list.

[edit] Debug mode

Grim Fandango supports a special mode to ease testing and debug. See Grim Fandango Debug Mode for more information.
